Newsbriefs:
Anastasis - After completing a seven-month project in Benin, West Africa, the ship sailed to Europe in June. Besides the annual dry dock and shipyard work, a seven-port public relations visit in five countries is underway. In November the Mercy Ship returns to Africa for outreach projects in Sierra Leone and The Gambia.
Caribbean Mercy - Honduran President Carlos Roberto Flores and his wife Mary de Flores, participated in a reception welcoming the crew to Honduras in June. Healthcare teams are living ashore and conducting medical clinics in various locations near Puerto Cortez. Orthopaedic teams plan to treat more than 200 patients over the duration of the outreach. Two trucks fully loaded with orthopaedic supplies transported by Mercy Ships were delivered to the local hospital. Approximately 500 eye operations are anticipated and 3000 pairs of prescription glasses will be distributed.
Africa Mercy - What was formerly the two-story train deck of the roll-on roll-off ferry has been divided horizontally into two. The lower portion is the location of the hospital, wards, operating rooms, pharmacy, and recovery rooms. The upper level is becoming the accommodation for the future compliment of the 450 crew. As the conversion progresses and portholes are cut out of the bulkheads, the Mercy Ship will be ready for the final repainting in the traditional white and blue accents - signature colours of the Mercy Ship fleet.
Island Mercy - After 18 years in the Mercy Ships fleet, the island Mercy was sold on 4 May and will be used as a training vessel for Filipino seaman based in Manila. Known affectionately as the "Little Giant", the ship was powerfully used to reach hundreds of thousands over the years. Be watching for a farewell tribute in the next Mercy Ships newsletter.
