Prayers and Protests for unborn mark Human Rights Day
'LIFE NEWS' PRESS RELEASE21st March 2001
Today, 21 March 2002 Human Rights Day, was marked by prayers and protests on behalf of the unborn. About 500 people led by a group dressed in animal costumes marched from Addington Hospital, Durban to protest the abortion laws. The 'animals', a bear, hippo, giraffe, owl, frog, chicken, lion and penguin carried posters reading "Endangered species: human babies" and "Save the baby humans". One of the organisers, Pastor Derek King of Christians for Truth explained "Great effort is and $60 000 is being spent to transport endangered rhinos, but very little effort is being made to save endangered unborn babies." Police escorting the march found an aborted baby on Addinton beach nearby and a pro-abortionist threw eggs at the marchers from a nearby hotel.

Also today, at Newlands Rugby Stadium Cape Town, a group of 50 000 Christians prayed amongst other things against abortion in South Africa. They prayed that those considering abortion would choose life and for healing and comfort for those women who had had abortions. The internationally televised meeting also prayed for those offering alternatives to abortion and for those speaking up for the unborn. The event literature also encouraged Christians to "Pray that our Constitution may recognise that an unborn foetus has a right to life". Simultaneous mass prayer meetings were held in other cities around South Africa. Similar prayer meetings in other parts of the world have had a major impact for social change.
