Frank Chikane, on becoming Secretary of the SACC, used the song "This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine" as a pledge and The Rev. Bongani Finca, in his opening address, reminded the delegates of that.
He was speaking at the African Enterprise sponsored Port Elizabeth Christian Leadership Assembly (PECLA) and it fitted perfectly with the theme of the 'Church being Salt Light in Transforming our Society'. Over 240 people met together for two days at the end of September to explore what God is saying to the Churches of Port Elizabeth about their mission to the needy world, as Christians cannot just pass by on the other side.
The Rev. Rob Robertson, a trailblazer in the Presbyterian Church in the struggle against apartheid, reminded us that church life should be measured by the difference we make in the world around us, as salt must make a difference to the food.
Workshops were run on Education, Poverty, Job Creation, Family Values, Church and Government, Youth and HIV/AIDS. Proposals are being followed up by a continuation committee.
