For those of you who don't know me, I am an Anglican pastor who, for the past two years, has been exercising what is for me a new ministry as full-time Facilitator of church unity here in Uitenhage. I was called to this ministry through our Ministers Fraternal in Uitenhage and I am finding the work both fulfilling and challenging. By way of introduction to the article I am writing, I have been struck by some very strong and repetitive themes coming through in various prophecies received during the past two or three years. These prophecies concern the Church in the Metropole, i.e. all of us who are part of the Body of Christ in Port Elizabeth, Despatch, Uitenhage and elsewhere in the Eastern Cape. As I have reread these prophecies, I have become excited about what the Lord is doing in our Metropole, and even more about what He intends to do in and through us all. Let me say at the outset that this article is basically a setting out of prophecies and signs received. The recommendations I make at the end are purely my own, so I ask here, as I will again at the end of this article, that you pray through it all and hear what the Lord may be saying about it to you and your congregation. The layout of the prophecies will be, as far as I can determine, in chronological order and in the original format. All of them were confirmed at the time they were received by "the others" present: "Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said." 1 Cor 14:20 (NIV). Some of them include signs prophesied as well. Where these signs have come to pass, and where prophecies have been, or are being fulfilled, I will mention it as well. PROPHECIES GIVEN BY DAVE DOVETON I will begin with two prophecies given by Dave Doveton on 31 August and 8 October 1997 respectively and set out below. At the time of these prophecies Revd. Dave Doveton was on the staff of The College of the Transfiguration, an Anglican theological college in Grahamstown. 31 August 1997 "You are my chosen people, and you are very precious to me. I have chosen you for a purpose and have gifted each of you according to my purpose. I am beginning to do a work amongst you that I want to tell you in the clearest and most emphatic way is very important. I am working amongst you to prepare you. A fire is coming says the Lord, that is overwhelming fire, it is the fire of my Spirit, and it is coming to cleanse, purify and prepare you. I am raising up a church which will obey me and will show my power and love throughout the nations. Sparks of this fire have already begun to break into flame in various places, but I will surely send a great fire here (Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth). As this great fire takes hold you will see great signs says the Lord, both wonderful and terrible signs as my Spirit works. I will act to confirm my word with signs following and I will act with terrible swiftness against those who try to work against me. You will see salvation and judgement says the Lord, as I come to revive and restore my church. What is important is not so much the signs, but the fact that I will be powerfully present with you. My cleansing fire is coming to burn out all impurity, all uncleanness, in my body: it is coming to heal, to deliver and to set free. This fire will expose every dark hidden act, every wrong motive, the secrets of many hearts will be revealed and all that is not of my Spirit will be exposed as false. This fire will break many bondages, it will set free those long imprisoned in many ways. It will break down barriers, barriers of denomination, class, culture and race. As the fire begins to fall I will pour out a spirit of supplication and mourning and you will all realise the power of sin to destroy; above all you will realise the power of my love to save you completely. Even now I am calling my intercessors to take up their weapons of warfare and go to battle in the heavenly realms, even now many are being summoned to pray, intercede and seek my face. This fire will purify my church and equip my people to do their task in this world. This fire will begin to fall in the streets and habitations of this nation - it will overwhelm people as they walk, sleep, work and play. I will cleanse this nation of unrighteousness and heal it. I will use this nation to glorify my name and to reach northward to my people of Africa, so that the knowledge of the Lord shall fill this continent." back to index 8 October 1997 The prophetic sign is the sign of the rainbow in a clear sky.* I believe that the word of the Lord for us at this conference is a word of encouragement. The sign of the rainbow was a sign over Port Elizabeth. Just as this sign was a sign of the covenant which God made with Noah, so too God is opening a window of grace for this city and this region. God is also calling upon us all to seize the moment of his favour. The Eastern Cape region has been a place where there has been poverty, oppression and darkness and destruction, but as we share what God is giving, both spiritually and materially, blessings and abundance will flow out of this region. Rain is coming from a clear blue sky* - where there was formerly nothing, God will create abundance. The Holy Spirit will come in unexpected and new ways, the Holy Spirit will come in gentleness and great power. The Lord is calling us, as he called Noah out to go forth and "multiply" - to go out to the rest of our region, the rest of our country, and the rest of Africa. The Lord is also calling up intercessors to bring his intentions for his people to pass. These intercessions will be used in the rescue of people from darkness and death. So too as Noah did all God commanded him, as you obey the command of the Lord, the fear of you will fall on all, you will be a church built up in the fear of God and the comfort of the Holy Spirit (Genesis 6:22, Acts 9:31). Finally, there is a word of warning - the waters of Noah's day were a symbol of salvation to some, but judgement for others. So too there will be acts of God both of salvation and of judgement. As Noah's well-being depended on his obedience to God in tumultuous times, (Genesis 6:22), so too will ours; we are entering urgent times." BISHOP ERIC PIKE CIRCULATED THESE TWO PROPHECIES TO ALL THE PARISHES / CONGREGATIONS IN THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF PORT ELIZABETH. (* Underlining and bold type are my additions, for ease of reference.) Both the signs mentioned in the second prophecy (8 October 1997) have come to pass! The EP Herald reported as headline news on 15 December 1999 that there had been a rainbow in a clear sky. The headline read "SUNBOW AWE". The event itself was not miraculous, because there is a scientific explanation for this extremely rare phenomenon, but for us it was significant because of the prophecy that such an event would be for us a sign. The second sign (8 October 1997), that of rain falling from a clear blue sky, occurred in Uitenhage last year in August during a mission visit by a team from African Enterprise Pietermaritzburg, led by David Peters, a full-time evangelist with AE. The team were unaware of this prophecy, but told us how one evening it rained first at the church they were at and again later at the pastor's house, where they went for a debriefing. The night was clear and starlit and the rain fell only in the church grounds and again, a while later, only around the pastor's house. Although it happened at night and not during the day, I believe that the way it happened - out of a clear sky, and in two very localised places, is a confirmation of that sign. back to index "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord God Almighty." PROPHECY GIVEN BY GRAHAM COOKE The next prophecy I want to mention was given through Graham Cooke, an English pastor, who visited Harvest Christian Ministries on 22 - 23 July 2000. His prophecy and exhortation is reproduced below. I was at the meeting where this prophecy was given and what follows is my own shortened transcript of the tape made that evening. (It is shortened to avoid repetition.) "I Proclaim to you, in Jesus' Name, that this next year will be a year of unparalleled favour in the Lord. This will be a year like no other year you have ever had in your life. I proclaim over this place, over this church, over this city a year of unparalleled favour. The enemy's going to come against you but you're going to have favour to overcome, favour to overcome, favour to overcome. I proclaim to you, your household, in your life, and to you personally, and to your husband, and to your wife, and your kids, and your family that you're going to have a year of unparalleled favour. From this moment, now to July 22nd next year, you're going to have a year of unparalleled favour. Take advantage of the grace of God, take advantage of the grace of God. Listen: you know what this year is for? It's not just for you, that you can get blessed; it's for what you can sow into the Kingdom. This year God is going to bless you, and I believe He's going to bless you outrageously. I want to tell you this from the youngest to the oldest, what you sow this year will come back to you a hundredfold. What you sow as a family, what you sow as an individual, financially, prayerfully, in blessing, what you sow will come back to you a hundredfold. What you sow as a family will come back to you a hundredfold. What you sow as a church will come back to you a hundredfold. Guys, take advantage of the grace of God. Whatever ministries are here this year, sow outrageously. This will be the year you take off into a whole new dimension of blessing. God is going to pour down upon you - pressed down, shaken together, running over. This is a year of unparalleled favour - keep giving, watch what God can do. You can make incredible strides. Guys, don't mess this up. It's also a day of vengeance. Get revenge on the enemy (i.e. Satan). It doesn't matter how much the enemy cries or shouts or threatens, no matter how much your circumstances may seem to work against you, this is a year of unparalleled favour. You're going to learn to give in the face of your own need, and see your needs exploded. Unparalleled favour and revenge - what a sweet and deadly combination &ldots;. whatever the enemy has used to rob you of, it's going to come back. Get creative &ldots;. pray knowing that something's going to happen." A PRAYER "Father, in the Name of Jesus we receive a year of favour. And we want to say to you Lord, that we're going to give and give and give. We're going to sow in this year and our famine is going to be over. The famine around this area, this town, this city, is going to be over. The years of famine and want and need are going to be over. And we're going to lead the way for this entire region, whether they're Christians or pre-Christians. We're going to lead the way. Father, would you help us to take advantage of Your outrageous generosity. In Jesus' Name, Amen." (My Comment: I believe this prophecy has seen partial fulfillment in some ways. However, as any harvest is always at the end of the season, so we should see the greatest blessing and favour as July 22nd draws nearer, if this prophecy is fulfilled.) back to index "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord God Almighty." PROPHECIES FROM THE TRANSFORMATIONS CONFERENCE IN CAPE TOWN - NOV 2000 The next set of prophecies has come out of two "Transformations" conferences held early in November 2000. The first was in Cape Town and the second, entitled "Beyond 2000" was held in Port Elizabeth on 8 - 10 November 2000. I have reproduced, with grateful acknowledgement to African Enterprise, a prophecy given via Johan Boot at the Cape Town conference below. We believe this prophecy applies as much to Port Elizabeth as to Cape Town. The people who heard it in Cape Town also believe it does. " "It's not the God you want, it's the God who hears", says the Lord, "and that is the way I will come", says God." Then the Lord showed me crowns and the Lord showed me different people walking with different crowns and they asked the Lord, 'Why don't you bind our crowns together? Why don't you bring unity and bring all the crowns together, then the authority will flow'. And the Lord says "No, that is not the way it would be". For the time is now that the Lord says that each one will lay down his crown. And you think, 'Yes Lord, I will lay down my crown, just make sure that that jewel there be in Your crown'. The Lord says "No that is not it". The Lord says "I will take your crowns and I will take your jewels and I will crush it, and I will make powder out of it, and out of that I will bring forth my crown", says God. "For no-one will be able to say 'We did this, and we did that', no-one will be able to say"For this was what we did', for the Lord says "what I am going to do no man will be able to put his name on it, no man will be able to say 'For we did this or we did that' ". The Lord says "I will move. I will move. I will move". The Lord says You ask Me for a move, but do you have My heart? You ask Me to move in your midst, but do you have My heart?" says God. "Many of you", says the Lord, "you understand the principles but you do not have My heart. You understand the ways but you do not have My heart". The Lord says "Unity does not come because you understand you need to be one. It comes because you have laid down your crown. You have allowed Me to put you through the mill and you have allowed Me to break and shake the old rubbish off and you have allowed Me to put you through, and put you in the place where I need you to be. It's no longer where you think you should be. It's where I will put you" says God, "that will bring unity. For I am restoring My Body, I am restoring My Body, for I am going to come like a river. I am going to come like a river, and the rivers and the different flows are going to become one river" says God, "and the place where that is going to fall and the place where that is going to come together, none of you knows", says God. "None of you understand for that is why it will be called the move of God, and not a move of this or that or the other thing. No one would be able to say 'For it was us' for I will move in a place and I will move in a sphere where you do not understand", says God. You cannot see it right now. You cannot visualise it. The time is that you surrender, that you lay down, put things on the side. If you have a crown, put it on the side", says God, "for if you want Me you need to understand I only come in one way, and that is as Lord. I only come in one way, and that is as King. For when I am Lord over Cape Town (PE), you shall see My blessings. When I am Lord over Cape Town (PE), you shall see My blessings. When I am Lord over Cape Town (PE) you shall see My river. Invite My Presence. Invite My Presence, for you will learn of Me", says the Lord, "for I am meek and I am humble. Learn from Me", says God. "And I will change your hearts and it will be turned around", says the Lord, "and you shall come as one. You shall repent and you shall have a spirit of unity. Not unity of concept but unity of heart because you would have My heart", says the Lord. "It's time to exchange, to exchange your heart for My heart", says the Lord. "Move with me. Open, open, allow My Presence to touch you". " In addition, various other prophecies were brought at the Cape Town conference. Here they are: Via Harold Caballeros, a pastor who is featured on the "Transformations" video. He lives in Almolonga (remember those huge vegetables?!) . "In South Africa there is going to be a manifestation of breakthrough for the Lord comparable to the youth breakthrough that they have had in Guatemala". Harold went on to say that he has "an anticipation of great growth, multiplication, an anticipation of such blessing amongst the youth of the city (Cape Town/Port Elizabeth) that in the plazas and squares many will turn to Christ. There will be a breakthrough amongst the young people so that many drug- and crime-related problems will be broken and people brought to Jesus." Harold had a special exhortation for the youth: "Do everything that comes to your hand, and the Lord will be with you. Be careful not to set any boundaries or limits on what you will now watch me do through you." A further prophecy at the Cape Town conference said: "Complete, not compete". (Referring to inter-denominational relationships.) Another prophecy said: "When the village dies, the church will die. Pray for the village." PROPHECIES FROM THE "BEYOND 2000" TRANSFORMATIONS CONFERENCE IN PORT ELIZABETH, 8 - 10 NOVEMBER 2000 The Revd. John Simons, an Anglican pastor from England, who now runs an intercessory prayer ministry organisation covering the entire United Kingdom, was the main speaker. He was leader of a team sponsored by Sharing of Ministries Abroad (SOMA), an organisation whose aim is to help maintain renewal in the Anglican church worldwide. John shared the following pictures, or visions,received from various people: A picture, or vision, of a maze with high walls, and the leaders of the church bewildered and lost in it. As he prayed and watched, the walls of the maze became smaller, so that in the end the leaders could step over the barriers and meet one another. A tub with a pot plant in it. Underneath the surface the soil was thick with matted roots. It is not sufficient to weed or prune on the surface, we must dig under the surface. Thereafter the pot plant can be transplanted. (This prophecy was addressed to Europe, but John and the team believe it could have application here in South Africa.) Also on this theme of the pot plant, a text :Jer. 6:14 :'They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. "Peace, peace," they say, when there is no peace.' (NIV) Meaning and Application: We are dressing the wounds of our community lightly. On the surface there are many that are healed, but underneath there are many things still to be rooted out and healed. A vast harvest. The Lord said: "Take your eyes of the harvest and look to Me, the Lord of the harvest." The reason given is that we are going to be so overwhelmed when our communities turn to Christ that we could easily be dazzled by it all and become proud. If to God's glory a huge harvest will be won, God wants us then to be lost in wonder, love and praise for the Lord of the harvest. It's not our programmes but His Presence; it's not our policies but His Presence; it's not the scale of the harvest but the Lord of the harvest that should inspire and overawe us. Towards the end of the conference we all went into a time of prayer and waiting on the Lord. The following pictures/visions and prophecies were shared. After each one, as we continued in prayer, the people who brought them shared what they believed the Lord was saying by way of meaning and application. MORE PROPHECIES/VISIONS SHARED AT THE "BEYOND 2000" TRANSFORMATIONS CONFERENCE The Cross, with the Blood of Jesus running down and soaking into the ground. Meaning and Application: The Blood of Jesus must soak into the soil of the churches of Port Elizabeth to cover us, give us life and true fellowship in the Holy Spirit: the fellowship of suffering. "This is the year of the Lord's favour for Port Elizabeth." Also brought via Graham Cooke in July 2000. Confirmed by an intercessor at the conference who saw now as the time of God's favour. Meaning and Application: Act now - outrageously! An angel with a trumpet walking along and people flowing out of their homes and into the streets, following him. Meaning and Application: It's time for the Church of Port Elizabeth to come out of their homes and get mobilised for the battle in God's service! A vision of a person looking out from a comfortable living room, through a nice wood-framed window, to a scene of a big valley with destroyed, blackened city buildings beyond it. Meaning and Application: Move out of our comfort zones and get involved in Port Elizabeth and its desperate needs and situation. The valley in the vision is the Baakens valley. A vision of a beach, with children playing above the high-water level in soft sand, trying to ride tricycles in it and sinking into it. Down near the water was firm wet sand where they could ride their trikes easily. Meaning and Application: Stop playing games and get down to the firm sand where we can really move. Remember too that there will then be an element of danger, because it's within reach of the waves. Vision of the tip of a diamond sticking up out of thick black mud; then rain falling on it, washing the mud away until a whole beautiful diamond was exposed, it's base embedded firmly in rock. Meaning and Application: This is Port Elizabeth's situation: the city is that beautiful diamond - the diamond was reminiscent of the Donkin Memorial in shape. The mud of the city's sin is being washed away by the rain of the Holy Spirit until all will see that our city is embedded in and stands firm in its beauty on the Rock of Christ. We are being encouraged to continue praying for the Holy Spirit to do this washing away. A prophecy: "You won't see the dawn but you will see the light". This confirmed by another prophecy of the light of the Son rising on Port Elizabeth. Meaning and Application: After discussion, agreed that it means that as we go down into that valley (see 4. above) we won't see the sunrise but we will see the light on the valley's sides. As we get involved with our city's needs we won't see the Light of Christ initially, as it appears, but we will all see it later, unmistakably, in our ministry. A prophecy: "You are called to be a new nation, with Me as your Father, through my Son! In this new nation it does not matter what colour you are; you are all one nation. Love one another, as My children." Meaning and Application: The Lord's definite word on the racism that still blights our city in many ways. A vision of a sharp axe, together with a text, Eccl. 10:10 'If the axe is dull and it's edge unsharpened, more strength is needed but skill will bring success.' (NIV) Meaning and Application: Friend sharpens friend; keep our axes "sharp" through continuous fellowship, by building and maintaining our relationships. A dull axe blade duplicates and wastes effort. A vision of two apples, the one rotten with worms, the other perfect. Meaning and Application: A warning for the Church everywhere. Ensure that we are like the good apple. Avoid the corruption of sin, no matter where we may find it. Check beyond appearances. Two texts: Rev 3:11 'I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have so that no one will take your crown.' Application: Don't let the enemy take our crowns. Rev 4:10 '.. the twenty-four leaders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne .. '. 9 EXHORTATIONS FROM THE CAPE TOWN TRANSFORMATIONS CONFERENCE Finally, the Cape Town Transformations conference was given 9 exhortations, which the speakers believe the Lord wants shared in the Church worldwide. These exhortations were arrived at by the speakers at this Conference through prayer and discussion. VISION: Our vision has been too narrow and confined. Ask God continually for His Kingdom vision. PERSPECTIVE: We must develop a godly worldview. HOLINESS: Personal holiness is essential. Seek God's continuous cleansing. HUMILITY: We must recognise always our complete dependence on God. Develop a hunger for humility, and practise it. PRAYER AND INTERCESSION: United, fervent, continuous intercessory prayer is essential. LEADERSHIP: Bold, visionary, personal leadership is needed. UNITY: The Lord loves unity! See Psalm 133. We must become and remain reconciled to one another in the unity the Holy Spirit alone can give. COMPASSION: Acts of love and compassion by the Church are essential. CONCLUSION TO THIS ARTICLE: As I have stated, please pray through all these messages to ask the Lord if they are for your church or fellowship or organisation, and also if they are for the whole Body of Christ in the Metropole. As/if you receive confirmation, please plan further action. I have listed any recent prophecies I know of concerning the Church in the Metropole. This takes us up to November last year. I am sure there will be more by now on this theme. I am also aware that there may be prophecies I don't know about. Please share them. If I have made any mistakes or omissions in writing down all these messages, forgive me. Please give me the correct version(s)! I want to share three immediate priorities for action that have struck me in all that we have received. I am sure there will be others emerging. CONTINUE TO INTERCEDE, PRAY AND TRUST THE LORD AS NEVER BEFORE The Holy Spirit is on the move! ACT "OUTRAGEOUSLY" FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD Take bold initiatives, invest time, resources, people and money in the Lord's work as never before. CONCENTRATE ON OUR YOUTH Pour resources into them and into youth ministry as never before. I am sure many of you are already doing all this, but if your church wants to invest more widely in youth ministry and is not sure how to do it, why not contact the specialist non-denominational full-time youth organisations we have in this region? My apologies if I have omitted any. Here is a closing exhortation (a short one!) from me personally: "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!" Phil. 4:4 (NIV).
