Almalonga, Guatemala was a town in the grip of poverty, alcoholism and crime. The community has been radically transformed and no longer has need of bars or jails. Agricultural productivity has increased a hundred-fold. Cali, Colombia used to be the drug capital of South America. When Churches came together to pray, the drug cartels began to unravel and the grip of fear created by drug related crime was broken. Even civic leaders in Cali now openly support the Church initiative to transform the city. Similar reports of community transformation have been received from other countries around the world including Kenya, Nigeria and other parts of Africa. Researchers who have been studying these transformed communities around the world came to present a series of conferences in South Africa. The Port Elizabeth conference, which was one of eight regional conferences, was held from 8 to 11 November 2000 at the Full Gospel Church in Algoa Park, Port Elizabeth. The purpose of the conference was to share what God is doing in bringing about the radical transformation of communities around the world and to equip local churches with the prayer and intercessory skills to participate in the transformation of our community. The conference was endorsed by more than 70 leaders from all sectors of the Christian community in the Port Elizabeth metropole.
