Walk of Hope
8th to 21st March 2002

Aims: To instill hope among all South Africans, to promote the National Day of Prayer, and to raise funds for the Day of Prayer.

 
Important dates:

  • 3rd March 2002 - The Walk of Hope will be LAUNCHED at a ceremony in Bloemfontein in Fountain Head Church in Att Horak Street.

  • 4th March 2002 - Teams of runners start setting out from Bloemfontein for 7 South African sports stadiums.
  • 21st March 2002 - National Day of Prayer Events at the 7 big stadiums.

 
Walk of Hope Teams
Seven teams - each team is made of a running team and a ministry team.

  • Running Team:
    runs a relay from Bloemfontein to destination city stadium. With the help of the towns, they will carry the baton from town to town which contains Message of Hope.

  • Ministry Team:
    They act independently of the runners, reaching the towns in the late morning. Here they perform at old age homes and train youth leaders in how to present "Kids Games". When the Running Team arrives with the baton, they present a 1 hour function in a hall in the town. In the morning they might perform at a celebrity breakfast.

PE to Middelburg by Combi

  Saturday 9th:

Start the run - 98km to Cradock

  Sunday 10th:

Start at Cradock - 113km to Somerset East

  Monday 11th:

Somerset East - 86km to Bedford

  Tuesday 12th:

Adelaide / Bedford - 37km to Fort Beaufort

  Wednesday 13th:

Fort Beaufort - 70km to Grahamstown

  Thursday 14th:

Grahamstown - 58km to Port Alfred

  Friday 15th:

Port Alfred - 53km to Alexandria.

  Saturday 16th:

Alexandria - 110km to Uitenhage

  Sunday 17th:

Uitenhage - 66km to Jeffrey's Bay

  Monday 18th:

Jeffreysbay - 18km to Humansdorp

  Tuesday 19th:

Humansdorp - 51km to Kareedouw

  Wednesday 20th:

Kareedouw - (131km) (30km)

  Thursday 21st:

Port Elizabeth 13:00 at Telkompark

 
Total time on the road: 14 days

Total running distance: 790km

This means on average:
8,6 km per person per day with 7 runners or
10,1 km per person per day with 6 runners and 13 days to complete.

What we need:

  • A data projector

  • A laptop- with Power Point program
  • At least two vehicles of which one is a combi
  • Running team 6-7 members
  • Ministry team 3-4 members
  • Energy drinks
  • Medical Kit

The team members:

  • Must be available from the 8th -21st March

  • The running team must be willing and able to run at least 5 km per day.
  • There is NO COST involved for outreach from the 8th -21st March.
  • Accommodation and food WILL BE SUPPLIED.

General information:

  • We leave from PE on Friday 8th March and start running on Saturday 9th March from Middelburg

  • We will need the vehicles at the latest on the morning of the 8th.
  • Team members will meet on the morning of the 8th at a predetermined venue.
