Continuing a Legacy: serving the community
For more than forty years, Christian camping at Sumcay Camping centre in Nelson Mandela Bay has given young people, schools, churches, and community groups a place to grow, learn, and discover who they are. It welcomed thousands of campers every year and serving as a trusted resource for schools and churches across the region. Gumdale Camping and Conference Centre continues this legacy — creating a new home for a ministry that has shaped generations.
Gumdale is being developed under the umbrella of Scripture Union South Africa, an organisation known nationwide for its work with young people, schools, and volunteers. For decades, SU camps and programmes have helped young people build character, develop leadership skills, form healthy relationships, and explore faith in a safe and supportive environment.
When Sumcay’s property was sold due to urban expansion, the need for a new site became clear. Gumdale is that new site — a beautiful piece of land in the Elands River Valley donated by Dr Cameron MacIntosh, purpose-designed to continue serving the community for decades to come.
The new development will provide facilities for youth camps, school leadership programmes, church retreats, training events, and community gatherings. Two separate camp areas, bungalow-style accommodation, halls, kitchens, playing fields, pools, ropes courses, and outdoor learning spaces have all been planned with young people and educators in mind, practical tools that help schools run leadership camps, assist churches build community, and create safe spaces for youth leadership development and growth.
Gumdale exists to serve. While primarily designed for youth development, all communities will benefit from having affordable access that will also comfortably and easily accommodate adults and other retreat, teaching and fellowship groups. Volunteers will continue to play a vital role, just as they did at Sumcay, strengthening the sense of shared ownership and service. It is a continuation of a trusted ministry, a gift to the region, and a space where young people and communities can flourish together.
